A new late Eocene alligatoroid crocodyliform from Transylvania

Here we describe a new eusuchian crocodyliform, collected 130 years ago from shallow marine limestone of the late Eocene (Priabonian) fossil locality Cluj-Mănăștur, Transylvania, Romania. Diplocynodon kochi n. sp. is represented by three-dimensionally preserved incomplete skull that may have belonged to mature individual. The taxon possesses relatively narrow and elongated snout mediolaterally but anteroposteriorly wide premaxillary-maxillary notch, strengthened prominent bony ridge. nasals are excluded naris anterior tip frontal forms broad, complex sutural contact with nasals. possesses, similarly other members genus, 16-17 maxillary alveoli which fourth fifth enlarged confluent; lacrimal longer than prefrontal; ectopterygoid situated close posteriormost tooth alveoli, dorsal margin infratemporal fenestra bordered quadratojugal, preventing quadrate reaching fenestra, foramen aëreum on surface quadrate. occurrence D. in Priabonian eastern part Central Europe suggests genus was still present probably widespread across continent contributed its survival (at least locally) Eocene/Oligocene boundary.
